About FrameRipper
FrameRipper is a free, browser-based tool that extracts evenly spaced frames from any video file. It works entirely on your device - no uploads, no servers, no sign-ups.
Under the hood, it uses your browser's built-in HTML5 video decoder to seek to timestamps and the Canvas API to capture each frame as a JPEG, PNG, or WebP image. The result is a ZIP file containing all your extracted frames, ready to use. The full technical write-up walks through the code.
Who makes it
FrameRipper is built and maintained by Archis Vaze, a software engineer with a background in video tooling. He builds ffmpeg-based desktop apps and browser tools like this one, which process files on your device instead of uploading them. The tool, the format pages and the guides on this site are all his work, and he answers the support inbox himself.
Why it exists
Most online frame extractors upload your video to a remote server. That is slow, raises privacy concerns, and often comes with file size limits. FrameRipper was built to solve all three problems at once: by processing locally, extraction is fast, private by design, and has no artificial limits.
Who uses it
Content creators extracting YouTube thumbnails. Students screenshotting lecture recordings. Developers building image datasets from video. Editors pulling reference frames. Anyone who needs still images from a video file without installing software or creating an account.
Supported formats
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, FLV, MTS, M2TS, M4V, OGV and 3GP - any video your browser can decode. MP4 with H.264 has the broadest support across all browsers. Output formats are JPEG and WebP (quality adjustable, 92 by default) and lossless PNG.
Privacy
Your video never leaves your device. You can verify this by opening your browser's Network tab in developer tools during an extraction: the page's own analytics and ads make requests, but none of them carries your video or its frames. Read the full privacy policy.
How it is funded
The site is free and is supported by advertising and by the occasional coffee from people it saved some time. Advertising never has access to your files, and the tool works the same whether or not ads are shown.
What has changed
