Changelog
What has changed in FrameRipper, newest first. Found a bug? Tell me about it.
- Extraction can always be cancelled now. If the video had not loaded yet (most often on iPhone before it had been played once), the tool could sit on "Extracting frame 1" with Abort doing nothing. After a few seconds it now says what to do.
- Transparent WebM videos: frames no longer show traces of the previous frame in the see-through areas.
- Large extractions stay responsive. The preview gallery now refreshes a few times a second instead of after every single frame, which matters past a thousand frames.
- A file that cannot be seeked at all now stops with an explanation instead of stalling, and the progress bar keeps moving if a frame has to be skipped.
- The MP4 to PNG, WebM and lecture pages open with PNG already selected, and the YouTube thumbnail page starts at 60 frames.
- The tool page now explains every setting, which videos each browser can open, and the limits that actually apply. Three pages that were variations of the same tool were merged into it.
- Fixed a layout issue that squeezed the tool on tablet-width screens.
- New guides on how the extractor works under the hood and why iPhone needs one tap on play first, with more to follow over the coming weeks.
- Guides now include screenshots of the tool, side-by-side format comparisons and diagrams.
- The About page now says who builds and maintains the site.
- Rewrote every guide and format page with longer, more specific content, including file size tables, codec support tables and troubleshooting steps.
- Added terms of service and a cookie policy, and rewrote the privacy policy to cover analytics and advertising.
- Guides now suggest related reading by topic, and reading times are worked out from each guide’s actual length.
February to April 2026
- Published the first sixteen guides, from extracting frames and choosing an image format to iPhone, GoPro, dashcam, lecture and screen recording footage.
Early 2026
- FrameRipper launched: a free frame extractor that runs entirely in the browser, with nothing uploaded.
